Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)

The 2020 Montrose was picked September 10-29; the clusters between 10% and 20% smaller than normal. It has an intense nose that is even more powerful than the 2019, revealing layers of blackberry, briar, cedar, pencil shavings and smoke that evolve wonderfully in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, precise and poised, with unerring symmetry…

Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Montrose is epic. Dark, rich and brooding, the 2020 possesses remarkable intensity, and, yet it is somehow not excessively heavy. Time in the glass brings out the wine’s more elegant sophisticated side. All the elements are so well-balanced. Red/purplish fruit, lavender rose petal, gravel and spice are all accented by veins of intense…

2016 Bordeaux…It’s All In The Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Lalande-Borie is dark, powerful and ample, with an extra kick of concentration and brooding power that has developed during élevage. Blackberry jam, cloves, menthol, chocolate and espresso all meld together. This is a decidedly potent Saint-Julien, with quite a bit more intensity than it showed from barrel.

The DBs: Bordeaux 2016 In Bottle (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Lalande-Borie has a much more backward, introspective bouquet than the Fourcas-Borie, displaying earthy, tobacco-infused black fruit that refuses to come out and play. The palate is rounded on the entry with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity. Quite minerally in style, leading to a fresh finish. Allow this four or five…

Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Lagrange is fabulous, just as it was from barrel. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, mocha, licorice, cedar and new leather are all amplified in this gorgeous, striking Saint-Julien. Soft and racy, with no hard edges and exceptional balance, Lagrange is a winner.

2020 Bordeaux En Primeur: Almost Back to Normal (Jun 2021)

The 2020 Lagrange (Saint-Julien) is bright, punchy and wonderfully energetic. Red-toned fruit, sweet spice, cedar and pipe tobacco are all beautifully delineated in this mid-weight, vibrant Saint-Julien. I very much like the depth and tension in this barrel sample.
