1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Very good deep ruby. Spicy aromas of black raspberry, cassis, black cherry, licorice and cocoa powder. Supple and lush, with a chocolatey merlot character and adequate acidity. Not especially dense and unusually forward for a northern Medoc wine from this vintage. Finishes with dusty tannins and good but not outstanding length.

Fairest of Them All: Cos d’Estournel 1928 – 2015 (Oct 2018)

The 1961 Cos d’Estournel has quite a wide tawny rim to the extent that it implies a wine past its best. However, the bouquet is absolutely heavenly: exquisitely defined, gentle and unfolding with each swirl. There is something almost Burgundian about the aromatics: the purity, the detail and its seductive nature. It is very confit-like…

Fairest of Them All: Cos d’Estournel 1928 – 2015 (Oct 2018)

The 1995 Cos d’Estournel was matured in 100% new oak and according to the estate was intentionally picked at a higher ripeness level than previous years. It is definitely showing more maturity than the 1996 Cos d’Estournel with more bricking evident on the rim. Similarly the nose does not convey the same vigor and fruité…

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Red-ruby color, not quite as saturated as the ’96. More roasted and less minerally than the ’96: notes of black fruit, game, and toasty oak. Tightly wrapped and rather taut today, but offers terrific concentration and length. Today the wine tannins are very visible, and perhaps not quite as sweet as those of the ’96,…

Long Distance Runner: Brane-Cantenac 1924-2015 (Jan 2019)

The 2008 Brane-Cantenac continues to display the eucalyptus element that I have noticed on previous bottles, and frankly, it’s distracting and obscures the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied and slightly medicinal in style, and one of the most rounded Brane-Cantenacs in recent years in terms of texture, something that I would not have predicted…

The 2008 Clarets (Jul 2011)

Full red. Aromatic nose of raspberry, plum, currant, licorice and menthol lifted by a floral element. Vibrant and light on its feet, with strong but harmonious acidity giving energy and lift to the flavors of currant, fresh herbs and flowers. Dry, classic claret with a note of fresh herbs on the subtly long aftertaste. I’d…
