The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Full medium ruby. Very primary nose of cassis, licorice, earth and leather, complicated by an almost exotic note of chocolate. Then suave, broad and dry, with a fine-grained texture and very good palate coverage. Doesn’t currently show the lift or intensity of the best Medoc wines of the vintage, but offers a fleshy, solid impression…

The Glorious 2002 Red Burgundies (Feb 2016)

Bright medium red, with little sign of amber. Expressive aromas of redcurrant, cinnamon, mocha, leather and earth, with complicating ferrous notes of iron and tobacco. Wonderfully silky and fine-grained, showing lovely class and lift to its red fruit and spice flavors. Not a powerhouse but remarkably suave and smooth for Pommard. Really rises and lingers…

2004 and 2003 Red Burgundies (Mar 2006)

Then almost shockingly fresh in the mouth, with penetrating and rather delicate flavors of red berries and flowers. Still quite tightly wound but already offers compelling inner-mouth perfume. Finishes with building tannins and outstanding verve.

2009 Red Burgundies (Mar 2012)

Good full, bright red. Reduced, musky aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, smoke, menthol and game. Dense, sweet and large-scaled, in a deceptively gentle style for young Bonnes-Mares. Turned creamier and more saline in the glass. Finishes with big, rich tannins and strong notes of spices, mocha and chocolate. I predict this will shut down in…

The 2009 Red Burgundies from Bottle (Apr 2012)

The 2009 Bonnes-Mares is quite big and powerful yet also possesses a seamlessness that is very 2009. Waves of black fruit, spices, menthol and licorice saturate the palate as this large-scaled, dramatic wine opens up in the glass. The Bonnes-Mares boasts a tremendous combination of fruit and sheer structure. The 2009 is more approachable than…
