The 2009 Clarets (Jul 2012)

Good deep red. Pretty cassis and floral aromas. Silky, subtle and fresh, with sound acidity framing the pungent dark berry and lightly herbal flavors. Very nicely balanced wine with an elegant finish featuring suave tannins, an intriguing saline quality and subtle persistence.

Bordeaux 2009: The Best Ever? (May 2010)

(a blend of 53% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot and 7% cabernet franc; 13.2% alcohol; ph 3.87; IPT 75; 37% selection) Aromas of spicy plum, stony minerals and herbs are currently a bit subdued. Suave and fine-grained, with a light touch to its rather wild flavors of blackcurrant, licorice, minerals and violet. Finishes with easygoing tannins…

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet 1978-2015 (Jun 2019)

Tropical fruit, butter and marzipan notes are all accentuated in the 2011 Montrachet. A hint of classic reduction adds freshness to balance out the wine’s natural richness and opulence. All things considered, the 2011 is drinking beautifully now, but will probably mature a bit faster than some of the surrounding vintages. Today, it is quite…

Myth Over Matter: Mature Burgundy 1920-2019 (Mar 2023)

The 2011 Montrachet Grand Cru is the first wine of La Paulée, and naturally, it is a suitable way to commence proceedings. Just a shame it is corked. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune.

2011 Red Burgundies (Mar 2014)

Pale yellow-gold. Very reserved nose offers licorice, wild herbs, anise, menthol and a whiff of meat; not at all a fruity style. Then silky and shapely in the mouth, with an impression of strong extract to the flavors of iodiney minerality, fresh herbs and vanilla. Not a honeyed style for this bottling. Finishes with excellent…

Drink Your Idols: Roumier’s Musigny 1976-2008 (Aug 2019)

The 2007 La Tâche Grand Cru is a vintage that I have not tasted since bottling. Now 11 years old, it shows extremely well in the context of the growing season. Almost delicate red fruit springs from the glass, wild strawberry and morello cherries mingling with undergrowth and tree-bark-like scents, becoming more floral with aeration…
