Vingt-Vingt Vins: Bordeaux 2020 (May 2021)

The 2020 Le Petit Lion was picked September 10–29 and matured in 30% new oak. It has a straightforward bouquet of scents of raspberry, cranberry and touches of pomegranate, all intermixed with loamy aromas and undergrowth. But it is certainly fruit-forward, as you would expect. The palate is framed by lithe tannins, judiciously peppered red…

2020 Bordeaux En Primeur: Almost Back to Normal (Jun 2021)

The 2020 Le Petit Lion du Marquis de las Cases is a very serious second wine. The aromatics alone are immediately enchanting. This mid-weight Saint-Julien is so expressive today. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit, mint, rose petal and cedar are all very nicely lifted. Firm, but precise tannins lend energy and proportion. The Petit Lion…

Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)

Representing around one-third of the total production, the 2020 Le Petit Lion sees 30% new oak. It has an attractive nose with blackberry, raspberry coulis, hints of iodine and pressed iris flowers. Not intense, but nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins that frame the red berry fruit laced with white pepper and…

A rich, dense purple thanks to the altitude, the complex, ripe nose presents notes of sour cherry and blackcurrant along…

The 2020 Blend Clos Apalta is 64% Carménère, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot from Apalta, Colchagua. It was aged for 27 months in 85% new barrels. Rich purple in hue. The clearly defined, ripe, complex nose has a leafy character underlined by fruit such as prune and blueberry jam along with…

2008 and 2007 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2010)

Vivid purple. Highly aromatic nose shows dark berry preserves, potpourri and white pepper. Lush, creamy blackberry and blueberry flavors are lifted by peppery spices and framed by velvety tannins. The sappy finish clings with very good authority and repeats the blueberry note, with a late note of candied licorice building with air.
