Piedmont Report: Checking in on the 2001 Baroli (Apr 2012)

The 2001 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell’Annunziata is huge and seamless from start to finish. The wine totally envelops the palate with masses of dark red fruit, roses, spices, and mint, all supported by nearly imperceptible tannins. The volume and shape of the 2001 is simply breathtaking. This is Scavino’s most vibrant 2001. It is also…

2003 Barolo: Ten Years Later (Jun 2014)

Massolino’s 2003 Barolo is a beautiful wine. Medium in body and gracious to the core, the 2003 is laced with sweet tobacco, crushed herbs, licorice and orange peel. The 2003 has reached its tenth birthday in style, but it is also approaching maturity, so any remaining bottles are best enjoyed sooner rather than later.

Focus on Oregon Pinot Noir (May 2009)

Medium red. Smoky red berry and cherry compote aromas are complicated by sassafras and herbal notes, along with a hint of cola. Fleshy and round, offering sweet black raspberry and candied cherry flavors, supple tannins and slow-building spiciness. Clings impressively on the finish and strongly repeats the cherry note.

Lail Vineyards J. Daniel Cuvée: 1997-2016 (May 2019)

Bright medium ruby. Wonderfully nuanced nose combines dark berries, black cherry, licorice and graphite minerality. Quite juicy and penetrating, even a bit youthfully tight, and much less thick than the 2003 and 2002 examples, but boasts terrific purity, definition and lift to its dark fruit, mineral and intriguing spice flavors. This really dances on the…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Full red. Slightly roasted aromas of cherry, plum, mocha, coffee and charred oak. Supple and chunky but a bit flat and in need of more definition. Distinctly low-toned on the back end, with some drying wood tannins.

The Top Clarets of 2006 (May 2009)

Good ruby-red. Liqueur-like blackberry, bitter chocolate and mocha aromas are complemented by sexy oak. Supple, sweet and tactile, but with fruit currently overshadowed by notes of truffle and earth. A chewy wine with good stuffing, but the broad, toothdusting tannins call for several years of bottle aging.
