The 1990 Clarets…To Have and To Hold (Nov 1993)

Very good color. Ripe cherries, herbs and chocolate on the nose. Suave and silky on the palate; densely constructed, but sound acids lend clarity to the flavors. Lovely balance and subtle finishing fruit. Showing very well early on for this wine, but has the structure to age.

New Releases from Australia (Jul 2006)

Bright violet. Jawdroppingly pure bouquet of blackberry, boysenberry, blackcurrant, kirsch, exotic tobacco, graphite and licorice, with a crystalline mineral tone running all the way through. Like liquid velvet in the mouth, showing a stunning melange of dark berry flavors that seem weightless but pack an amazing wallop of flavor. This is only 13.4% alcohol but…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Full, saturated red-ruby. Knockout nose combines redcurrant, tropical chocolate, leather, woodsmoke and nutty oak with exotic chocolate mint and coffee liqueur; still manages to retain floral lift even in this beastly vintage. Then wonderfully fat, sweet and full, even if it comes across as almost heavy following the ineffable 2005 and 2004 examples. But relatively…

2016 Barolo: Right Place, Right Time (Feb 2020)

The 2006 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is a wine of pedigree, nuance and stylishness. Fresh and vibrant in the glass, the 2016 is developing beautifully in bottle. Sweet floral notes add lift to the dark Cannubi Boschis fruit. Sandrone's Cannubi Boschis has never been this finessed, this elegant. This is the best bottle of the 2006…

Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 2009)

Good deep red. Knockout, wonderfully expressive nose combines dark raspberry, musky coffee, mocha and underbrush. Big, rich, powerful and classically dry, with a strong brown spice component currently dominating the mouth. But this is utterly spherical and seamless from day one. The extremely long finish dusts the palate with fine tannins. A rather elegant and…
