Bordeaux 2010: All That Glitters… (May 2011)

(a 75/25 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot) Bright ruby with purple highlights. Reticent nose offers delicate aromas of blackcurrant, violet and cedar. A pronounced minerality gives delicacy to the rather forward blackberry, gunflint and licorice flavors. Finishes long, but with a slight green edge to the building tannins. A nicely balanced, medium-bodied Lagrange: perhaps…

The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

Bright ruby-red. Brooding aromas of blackberry, cassis and licorice. Backward and youthfully medicinal but already shows lovely floral lift–to to mention ripe framing acidity–to its dark berry, menthol and licorice flavors. A bit strict today and in need of several years of bottle aging, but the firm tannins are ultimately rather velvety.

Sonoma Preview: 2021 Edition (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Pinot Noir (Freestone Occidental) is a blend of mostly young vines from Running Fence, Bodega Ridge plus a bit of Bodega Headlands. Delicate and elegant, with striking depth, the 2019 is a total knock-out. Red/purplish berry fruit, lavender, rose petal, mint and blood orange are all beautifully delineated. The 2019 spent 11 months…

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Village is in some ways a repeat of the previous vintage insofar that it demonstrates more precision and terroir-expression than the Puligny Village. The palate is well-defined with a fine bead of acidity, quite sappy with a peachy, rather resinous finish. Good extract here – I might well cellar this for 3-5…

2016 Brunello di Montalcino: Radiance Personified (Nov 2020)

The 2016 Giodo Brunello di Montalcino is darkly alluring with a slightly rustic feel that adds further sultry depths. A whiff of crushed stone and sage gives way to black raspberry with an underpinning of white pepper in a display of contrasts. It’s silky in texture with a polished feel to its ripe red fruits,…

Bordeaux ’08: Far Better Than Expected (May 2009)

(61% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 9% petit verdot; 40% new oak; 44 hl/ha) Bright ruby. Highly floral aromas of ripe red cherry and sweet licorice. Then spicy, sweet and juicy on the palate, with rather forward flavors of sweet, ripe red fruits complemented by a hint of minerality. Just a trace…
