1998 and 1997 Red Burgundies (Mar 2000)

Ruby-red. Seductively spicy aroma of blackberry and cocoa powder. Very concentrated if reticent flavor of sweet black cherries; boasts an unusually creamy texture for this wine. Finishes very long and subtle, with substantial but thoroughly even tannins. A wine of true grand cru intensity and class, and quite slow to evolve.

Lower Your Sails (Or Breeches): Beychevelle 1929-2019 (Mar 2023)

The 1996 Beychevelle has a light nose with caramel-tinged red fruit, a little soft and muffled, though not unpleasant. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins on the entry. There is quite a bit of brett here, rather gamey toward the finish. I don’t mind this 1996, but it is showing its age. This ought…

1998, 1997 and 1996 Bordeaux (May 1999)

Very good ruby-red. Spicy, expressive aromas of currant, leather and milk chocolate, plus a suggestion of stewed fruit. Sweet, lush and superripe in the mouth; the faint pruney quality repeats on the palate. Tannins are a bit tough. A whiff of damp earth on the finish detracts from the wine freshness.

2006, 2005 and 2004 Bordeaux (May 2007)

Good ruby-red. Currant, black raspberry, cocoa powder and graphite on the nose. Silky on entry, then impressively sweet in the middle palate, with classic Pauillac flavors of currant, chocolate and graphite dominating. This boasts the sharp focus of the vintage’s best examples but can’t quite match the 2006 for consistent ripeness and mid-palate depth. Tannins…

Vertical Tasting of Chateau Mouton-Rothschild (Aug 2011)

Deep ruby-red with a hint of amber at the rim. Cassis, licorice, minerals, tobacco and cocoa on the complex nose; this has started to develop more tertiary aromas and is less fruit-forward than just a few years ago. The palate shows considerable sweetness and an almost opulent mouth feel, with blackcurrant and blackberry flavors given…
