Burgundy With A Bit of Age: 2000-2014 (May 2019)

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas has a fresh, damp earth and soy-tinged bouquet. The palate is crisp and taut, a little rigid in the mouth and it just needs a little more substance on the finish. Tasted at Goedhuis & Co.’s annual Burgundy tasting in London.

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Nuits (Dec 2020)

The 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru is, to quote Antoine Gouges, an “outside vintage.” At seven years old, it has an open bouquet of mulberry, undergrowth and wilted rose petal aromas, a little ferrous in style. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, rustic in style and just missing some depth and…

The 2013 Red Burgundies (Jan 2015)

Bright red. Ripe, musky aromas of red berries, minerals and rust. Suave and creamy-sweet in the mouth, with an almost jammy ripeness but also very good framing acidity to the crunchy red berry flavors. Perhaps a bit youthfully disassociated at present, not to mention firmly tannic on the back end, yet this is easier to…

2012 Red Burgundies (Jan 2014)

Good deep red-ruby. Explosive aromas of black cherry, spices, minerals and licorice, lifted by a note of blood orange. An exhilarating high-wire act of fruit sweetness and piquant acidity on the palate, showing lovely floral cut to the flavors of dark fruits and spices. Finishes penetrating and long, with a late element of torrefaction.

The 2015 Red Burgundies: You Are So Going To Want Them (Jan 2017)

(13.5% alcohol; vinified entirely with whole clusters): Bright ruby-red. Sappy, liqueur-like scents of crushed cherry and tropical dark chocolate. High-toned, superripe and impressively concentrated, showing a strong torrefaction character in the mouth and finishing with serious breadth and a huge tannic structure. Almost too much today, with the dark chocolate quality repeating on the finish….

The Consistently Delectable 2014 Red Burgundies (Jan 2016)

(one of two barrels were new): Bright, dark red. Very reduced nose dominated by smoked meat and oak, with raspberry and redcurrant in the deep background. Fat, rich and savory; more gamey and saline than fruity in the early going but there’s good sweetness lurking. The tannins arrive late.
