A Century of Bordeaux: The Eights (May 2018)

The 1998 Pavie was Gerard Perse’s second vintage after buying the property and it was actually matured in 200% new oak. Now at two decades, it continues to be attired with a fresh and very attractive bouquet, blackberry, mulberry, clove and bay leaf, just a touch of Italian delicatessen in the background. I like the…

2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Ruby-red. Sappy, liqueur-like aromas of cherry, raspberry coulis, roast coffee and exotic wood spices. Wonderfully sweet and mouthfilling, but with harmonious acidity giving shape and clarity to the flavors. Finishes quite long, with fine tannins. Not at all overextracted; in fact, here the tannins seem a bit sweeter than those of the ’99. Still unfolding;…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Eights (May 2018)

The 1998 Smith Haut Lafitte was the vintage that signified a property that was about to be rejuvenated under Florance and Daniel Cathiard, although there was still a long way to go. Now at 20 years old, perhaps it is beginning to show its age on the nose and it has far less fruit, the…

2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Medium red. Complex aromas of currant, tobacco and smoke. Dry-edged in the manner of the vintage, but vinous and precise, with subdued sweetness and solid structure. Finishes with firm but rather sweet tannins and very good length. A classic, elegant style of Smith Haut Lafitte.

2012 Red Burgundies (Jan 2014)

Medium-deep red. Very ripe aromas of cherry, red licorice, graphite and sweet oak. Dense, creamy and deep, showing a seamless texture and terrific sappy verve to the flavors of red fruits and pungent minerals. A grand cru of compelling suavity, with a powerful mounting finish displaying chewy, noble tannins, saline minerality and a lovely light…

2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story… (Feb 2018)

Les Cruzelles, Denis Durantou’s Lalande de Pomerol, is once again impressive in 2015. There is notable volume and unctuousness to the super-ripe red cherry, espresso and mocha flavors. The 2015 needs another year or two to come together, but it is super-impressive. Les Cruzelles is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc from gravelly soils. The…
