Focus on Champagne (Nov 2003)

Very ripe, rich aromas of tangerine, smoke and sweet butter. Big, frothy and full, with slightly exotic, creamy flavors of soft citrus fruits and nutmeg framed and lifted by strong minerally acidity. Very dry, firm and long on the finish, hinting at more flavor complexity to come with further time in bottle.

Focus on Champagne (Nov 2003)

Very pale, bright color. Knockout nose of lemon, orange blossom, chalk, minerals and flowers offers great lift; pristine and vibrant. Wonderfully ripe, pure and perfumed in the mouth, with penetrating, sappy acidity contributing to the impression of structure and cut. Very intense lemon, lime, mineral and floral flavors complicated by an exotic suggestion of guava….

Champagne: The 2016 Summer Preview (Aug 2016)

Pol Roger’s 2008 Blanc de Blancs is a very pretty, expressive Champagne to drink now and over the next handful of years. White orchard fruit, sage, pastry and candied lemon peel open up nicely in the glass. This is an especially creamy, voluptuous 2008, although the acidity of the vintage comes through nicely on the…

Here too, the wine is well- made and offers good definition but not the detail or complexity of its peers at this price point. Piper-Heidsieck’s Rare is Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This bottle was disgorged in December 2007.

New Vintage Champagne Releases (Nov 2008)

(75% chardonnay and 25% pinot noir) Pale yellow with a very fine bead. Seductively perfumed nose displays orange, lime, mineral, thyme and honeysuckle scents; the chardonnay is very strong today. Energetic and pure, with dusty minerality adding lift and cut to the fresh citrus and orchard fruit flavors. The long, juicy finish leaves behind a…

Dom Pérignon in Three Acts (Nov 2017)

One of the highlights of the evening, the 1973 Dom Pérignon Œnothèque (Disgorged 2010) is vivid and finely sculpted. There is plenty of nuance, depth and freshness in the glass, but it is the wine’s staying power and overall persistence that stand out most, especially as the evening wears on. In this flight, the 1973…
