Vintage Port – The 2016 Declaration (Jun 2018)

The 1966 Taylor’s Vintage Port is a hugely overlooked Port. The bouquet is typical 1966 and oddly mirrors a Left Bank Bordeaux: conservative and masculine, yet detailed and offering attractive scents of cigar box, mahogany bureau, sandalwood and ripe cherry. The palate is foursquare with wonderful structure, spicier and more vigorous than the 1963 with…

2011 Vintage Ports (May 2014)

Bright medium ruby. Knockout nose combines smoky dark fruits, exotic flowers, spices, dried lavender, minerals and a balsamic nuance. Hugely concentrated, dense and primary but with penetrating minerality giving finesse and precision to the mid-palate. Extremely fine-grained, classy wine with fresh acidity and restrained sweetness. The firmly tannic, mineral-tinged finish features outstanding perfumed persistence and…

Vintage Port – The 2016 Declaration (Jun 2018)

The 1977 Taylor’s Vintage Port is initially tight and conservative on the nose: strawberry, baked cherry, tobacco and wild hedgerow notes emerging but remaining tight-lipped. This needs a good decant! The palate is endowed with depth and concentration, very well balanced with an attractive crispness. Perhaps you could argue that it is a linear and…

2010 Red Burgundies (Mar 2013)

Bright medium red. High-pitched aromas of cherry, menthol, licorice, fresh herbs and celery seed. Juicy, spicy and on the lean side, with slightly tart acidity enlivening the flavors of red cherry, raspberry, mint and menthol. Relies as much on its acids as on its light tannins for structure. Not a fleshy wine but pretty, vibrant…

The 2010 Red Burgundies (Feb 2012)

The 2010 Maranges Le Croix aux Moines shows great energy and focus in a medium-bodied style that is very appealing. Firm yet well-balanced tannins frame a core of expressive red fruit, flowers, mint and crushed rocks. This is a beautifully balanced wine from Camille Giroud that captures the personality of the year in spades.

The 2015 Red Burgundies: You Are So Going To Want Them (Jan 2017)

The 2015 Charmes-Chambertin is a soft-open knit wine with mid-weight structure and good overall persistence. This is the only wine in the range I tasted from tank. Perhaps for that reason, the Charmes is a bit reticent. It will be interesting to see if the wine gains more volume. The decision to move this wine…
