Test of Endurance: Bordeaux 2014 Ten Years On (Mar 2024)

The 2014 La Mission Haut-Brion offers bright and vivid scents that immediately captivate the olfactory scenes: black fruit, cedar, pencil box and light, minty aromas. It’s much better than its First Growth neighbor. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very harmonious, and has lovely depth with a gentle grip. This is a sophisticated and…

’16 vs. ’15 Northern Rhône: Heads You Win, Tails You Win (Apr 2018)

Deep ruby. Powerful blackberry, licorice and exotic spice aromas, along with floral pastille, olive and smoky mineral flourishes. Broad and seamless in the mouth, offering sweet cassis, boysenberry and cola flavors that tighten up slowly on the back half. Smoothly plays richness off finesse and finishes impressively long and sappy, featuring harmonious tannins and a…

Bordeaux 2015 At Age Ten (Jun 2025)

The 2015 Siran has a sensual bouquet with finely delineated black cherry, crushed violet and light cassis scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit and decent depth. This is peppery and focused with admirable structure on the finish. It has good potential. Tasted blind at the 2015 Bordeaux Ten-Year-On tasting.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti: An Essay in Terroir (Dec 2013)

The 1999 Échézeaux stands out for its striking inner perfume and sweetness. Dark cherries, plums, mocha, violets and menthol all flesh out in a rich, inviting Burgundy that is just now beginning to approach an early plateau of maturity that will last another 20+ years. With time in the glass, the 1999 turns deep and…

Life Is Funny Like That: 1999 & 2015 DRC (Apr 2018)

The 1999 Echézeaux Grand Cru was sadly not clean, so this note originates from another bottle proffered by a friend. It is a wine that I have tasted twice before and this was consistent. The bouquet embraces the opulence of the growing season and one can argue that it impinges upon the aromatics more than…

2000 and 1999 Red Burgundies (Mar 2002)

Saturated ruby-red. Tangy blackcurrant and blackberry on the nose, along with an exotic smoky note. Dense, sweet and pliant, with lovely subtle oakiness. Impressively concentrated Echezeaux that really builds in the mouth. Perfectly harmonious acidity combines with smooth tannins on the back end.
