Vertical Tasting of Domaine de Chevalier Rouge (Apr 2013)

(65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot and 5% cabernet franc; 12.9% alcohol): Medium-deep ruby-red. Woodsy aromas of forest floor and truffle combine with fresher red berry and cassis on the nose. Then sweeter and richer in the mouth than the autumnal nose suggests, showing a lightly syrupy quality to the red and dark berry flavors. Finishes…

1999, 1998 and 1997 Bordeaux (May 2000)

Medium red-ruby. Plum syrup, cassis, tobacco, mocha and a faint whiff of cardboard on the nose. Initially fat and supple in the middle, with notes of tar and tobacco, but grew a bit drier in the glass. Finishes with slightly green, dry-edged tannins. This was difficult to assess a year ago and is still hard…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Eights (May 2018)

The 1998 Domaine de Chevalier is a vintage that I had not encountered for a decade. Now at 20-year old it is still a little conservative on the nose and juxtaposed against the 2008, I find the younger vintage has more fruit and charm. 1998 and 1997 Sauternes (Jul 2000)

Lively, sweet aromas of citrus skin and peach complicated by spice, resin and marzipan from the new oak. Lively, intense apricot and spice flavors are currently quite tightly wound and dominated by the oak. Racy and stylish, but in need of aging. Showing very much as it did a year ago from barrel.

2000, 1999 and 1998 Bordeaux (May 2001)

Full ruby. Cherry, red berries, rose petal and licorice on the nose, along with sweet oak notes. Supple and nicely concentrated, with juicy inner-mouth flavors of red fruits, spices and flowers. This struck me as rather Burgundian in style. Sound acids give the wine excellent clarity and lift. Finishes with substantial, dusty tannins and subtle…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

Musky aromas of dark berries, espresso, mocha, woodsmoke and mint. Supple, sweet flavors of red fruits, cassis, smoke, tobacco and mocha. Finishes with rather fine tannins that seem riper than those of most 2002 Pomerols, but also good grip. (Christian Seely says that these tannins are riper than those of the 2001 Petit Village
