Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Echézeaux En Orveau Grand Cru (the lieu-dit has been stated on the label since 2018) has a perfumed, quite floral bouquet with dark cherries, wild strawberry and raspberry fruit, the marl terroir coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, the 20% whole bunch imparting a pleasing peppery note…

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

Three tries were made through the vineyard to make the 2020 Vougeot 1er Cru Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot this year due to differing ripening levels. Orchard fruit, touches of petrichor on the nose, this is quite Puligny-like in style. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, though it just needs…

The 2013 Red Burgundies: Fascinating and Challenging (Mar 2016)

Good medium red. Very ripe, soil-driven aromas of mocha, game, tobacco and cocoa powder. Strong red fruit and spice flavors emerge on the wonderfully dense, sweet palate, with an element of saline minerality providing another dimension. The wine’s superb energy gives the highly concentrated fruit a bulletproof quality. Impressively dense and large-scaled for the year,…

Back to Burgfest: 2017 Reds – Blind (Jan 2022)

The 2017 Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru has an open-knit, slightly bretty nose, earthy but not really coalescing in the glass. The palate is also quite funky and lacks freshness, the stems overtaking the freshness and fruité on the finish. Is this correct? It’s a little vexing. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)

The 2022 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is missing the same cohesion and presence as the Latricières at the moment, though it has an attractive rose bush/potpourri scent that emerges with time. The medium-bodied palate has a tad more angularity than the Latricières and fine mineralité, edgy and linear with a strict, tensile, lightly spiced finish. What…

La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy – Côte de Nuits (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Echézeaux En Orveaux Grand Cru is one of the few cuvées to includes 25% whole bunch. It has a light, airy bouquet of dark berry fruit, incense and a touch of lavender. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins on the entry, the stem addition lending quite a strong black pepper note toward…
