2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Good bright medium ruby. Dark berries, bitter chocolate and sexy smoky oak tones on the nose. Fat, full, concentrated and lush, with strong soil character and sound vinosity, giving the wine a chewy texture. Denser than the 2001. Finishes long and spicy, with ripe, suave tannins.

Looking Backward/Looking Forward: 2000 vs 2001 Bordeaux (Sep 2021)

The 2000 d’Armailhac offers brambly red berry fruit mixed with cedar and mint on a nose that is gentle but persuasive, nicely defined and open. The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2003)

Full ruby-red. Aromas of blackcurrant, smoke and roasted, nutty oak. Concentrated and sweet but in the process of shutting down. A Century of…Fours (Jun 2024)

The 2004 Clerc Milon has a somewhat airy, much more floral bouquet than the d’Armailhac but perhaps offers just a bit more class and panache. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and fine precision. The 2004 has a polished, gentle grip and a persistent black peppery finish. Very fine.

A Century of…Fives (Jun 2025)

The 2005 Haut-Bages-Libéral comes from an era when biodynamics were being introduced into the vineyard. This has a delightful bouquet, fresh and delineated with pure brambly red fruit and traces of orange zest and iodine. The palate is well balanced with sappy black fruit, quite sinewy at first, but a lovely salinity defines a finish…
