A Century of…Fives (Jun 2025)

The 2005 Nénin is a vintage that I had not tasted for some years. This is mature on the nose with peaty menthol scents that lean slightly towards the Rhône. Perhaps there is some Brettanomyces here? The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannins, leather and mocha notes, moderate depth and a slightly smudged, rustic finish….

2005 Bordeaux: Here and Now (Apr 2021)

The 2005 Nénin has aged impeccably. Savory, perfumed and wonderfully deep, the 2005 possesses terrific depth and lovely balance. As always, there is some firmness in the tannin, but a few hours in the decanter helps. Hints of cedar, tobacco, dried cherry and orange zest linger nicely on the finish. If well stored, the 2005…

2007, 2006 and 2005 Bordeaux (May 2008)

Medium red. Currant, plum and mocha on the nose. Then nicely vinous in the mouth, with a rather serious underlying structure supporting the flavors of plum and chocolate. A bit stern but has good stuffing.

A Century of Bordeaux: The Twos (Sep 2022)

The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, fleshy and ripe, good density and concentration. One of the most flamboyant 2012s in the line-up, this has so much purity on the finish. Gorgeous. Tasted blind at…

2012 Bordeaux: Messages in a Bottle (Jan 2016)

The 2012 Petit Eglise is round, sensual and inviting, with striking depth for a second label. Sweet red cherry, plum, exotic spice and licorice are all pushed forward. With air, the wine gains lift, finesse and delineation. Hints of lavender, sage and mint add brightness on the nuanced finish. There is a lot to like…

2012 Bordeaux: Messages in a Bottle (Jan 2016)

The 2012 L’Eglise Clinet is a real head-turner. Explosive and rich in the glass, the 2012 boasts superb depth throughout. Sweet floral and spiced notes develop first, followed by intense red and blue-fleshed fruit. Violets, mint, sage and sweet spices add nuance as the 2012 opens up, but it is really the wine’s vertical structure…
