Châteauneuf du Pape: The Lively 2013s and Lush 2012s (Apr 2015)

Opaque ruby. An intensely perfumed bouquet evokes spicy dark berries and potpourri, with zesty mineral and incense qualities adding complexity. Pliant boysenberry and candied lavender flavors are impressively fresh and focused, with a hint of licorice adding depth. Closes sweet, supple and broad, with resonating spiciness and gentle tannins that add shape and grip.

The Top Clarets of 2006 (May 2009)

Saturated bright ruby. The fruit-driven aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, violet pastille, espresso, minerals and sexy oak offer superb perfume. Hugely rich and sweet but with outstanding inner-mouth minerality and energy and enticing violet lift. For all its ripeness, there’s nothing roasted about this superconcentrated Saint-Emilion; in fact, this wine is quite backward and reserved…

The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2006)

Deep ruby-red. The freshest on the nose of the 2003s at this address, offering slightly high-toned smoky raspberry, minerals and graphite and a suggestion of medicinal austerity. Offers great breadth and early charm, but also possesses very firm underlying structure. Finishes with big, ripe tannins and outstanding grip and length.

A Century of Bordeaux: The Threes (Aug 2023)

The 2003 Haut-Brion has a decadent bouquet with a payload of glossy black fruit. There’s some warmth of alcohol here and just a touch of Brettanomyces. Yes, there is an element of the Northern Rhône. The palate has a sweet core of black fruit, plush with silky tannins and layers of blueberry and blackberry with…

Vinous Table: L’Express, Montréal, Canada (Oct 2019)

Rostaing’s knockout Côte-Rôtie Ampodium was just as good with the duck, offering very deep, pure aromas and flavors of violet, smoked beef, black pepper and dark plums. All of Rostaing’s Côte Blonde and La Landonne fruit went into this bottling in 2014. It made for a rich, hedonistic end to a wonderful meal, and I…

Northern Rhône: Solid ’14 Reds and Outstanding ’15 Whites (Jul 2017)

Bright violet. Heady, smoke-tinged blueberry, cherry and violet aromas pick up a hint of olive as the wine opens up. Sweet and energetic on the palate, offering concentrated dark berry and floral pastille flavors complemented by a suggestion of spicecake. The impressively long, blue-fruit-dominated finish delivers strong minerally cut and fine-grained tannins that sneak in…
