Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 d’Angludet has a fine bouquet, well-defined with tobacco and pencil box aromas infusing the black fruit, taut and displaying beautifully integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, composed and harmonious, maybe missing a little grip, but it sashays along with style. Delicious Margaux. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

Bordeaux 2020 – The Southwold Tasting (Nov 2024)

The 2020 Berliquet put in a phenomenal showing in this blind peer-group tasting that suggests I underestimated it out of barrel. It has a more savory bouquet than its peers, perhaps due to more Cabernet Franc, with touches of mint, black pepper and dried herbs infusing the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine…

Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)

The 2020 La Lagune is terrific. Rich, bold and explosive in the glass, the 2020 offers up a wild array of aromas and flavors. Spice, dried red cherry, cedar, tobacco and white pepper abound. More than anything, I very much admire the vibrancy and overall energy here. A whole range of floral and savory accents…

Bordeaux 2020 – The Southwold Tasting (Nov 2024)

The 2020 La Lagune has a lovely bouquet of pure, very perfumed black fruit laced with violet petals and undergrowth. The oak is very well integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, classic in style and harmonious, building notes of cedar, black pepper and tobacco toward the finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual…

Intellect & Senses: Bordeaux With Time (Mar 2025)

The 2016 Figeac is one of the finest vintages in recent years. This is perhaps what really put it on the map and ultimately led to its promotion in the Saint-Émilion classification. It has a wonderful, life-affirming bouquet with ebullient red fruit tones laden with mineralité. This bottle is perhaps slightly more floral than previous…
