1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Good medium red-ruby color. Less expressive but lively aromas of blue fruits and brown spices, plus a hint of confiture Not as ripe or fleshy as the ’96, but the dark berry and licorice flavors are currently rather tightly wrapped and unforthcoming. Finishes with substantial dusty (oak?) tannins that betray a slight astringency. Perhaps still…

2001 and 2000 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2003)

Medium red-ruby. Warm, inviting aromas of smoky red fruits, tobacco and black pepper. Bright and gripping on entry, then juicy and brisk in the middle, with slightly medicinal red fruit, mineral and tobacco flavors and somewhat clenched tannins. A restrained Chateauneuf that’s currently hiding its flesh. But has a classic structure for aging.

Moving On: Lafon-Rochet 1955-2017 (Jun 2023)

The 1996 Lafon-Rochet shows slight bricking on the rim. It’s a little rustic with black fruit, sandalwood, and sage on the nose, but this is certainly showing good vigor after 25 years. The palate is balanced with tannins, a little “sauvage” now, mushroom and mint, fennel and black tea, a slight dryness creeping in at…

Focus on Spain (Sep 2014)

Dark purple. Powerful blueberry, cassis, rose oil, licorice and mocha on the explosive nose. Broad and sweet in the mouth, with potent dark fruit and floral pastille flavors complicated by spicecake and cracked pepper. Finishes with smooth, even tannins and outstanding persistence, leaving behind notes of licorice, floral pastilles and smoky minerals.

1999, 1998 and 1997 Bordeaux (May 2000)

Medium ruby. Black raspberry and a hint of game on the slightly reduced nose. Sweet and bright, with good clarity of flavor thanks to harmonious, ripe acids. Shows the supple texture and fat of the vintage’s better examples. The tannins spread out nicely on the lingering finish. A good effort.

Balloons, Mermaids & Margaux: Château Giscours 1938-2023 (Apr 2025)

The 1999 Giscours doesn’t quite have the complexity of the ’98 on the nose, showing only blackberry, cedar and just a touch of pressed violet. It just doesn’t have quite the same degree of intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with mocha and leather on the entry. It’s quite fleshy in style but doesn’t give you…
