2001, 2000 and 1999 Bordeaux (May 2002)

Ruby-red. Aromas of smoky oak, chocolate, tobacco leaf, mint and earth. Flavors generally cooler than those of the 2001 and 2000, ranging from red fruit liqueur to less-ripe leafy and minty notes. Offers an attractive fruit/acid balance, but there’s less stuffing here to support the somewhat less ripe tannins, giving the finish a faint dryness.

Bordeaux 2010: All That Glitters… (May 2011)

Dark ruby. Very intense aromas of blackberry, licorice and chocolate; strongly minerally but needs more time to absorb its oak. Then rich and ripe but a little coarse in the mouth, with good red and black fruit density. A medium-bodied wine with a moderately long finish featuring building but smooth tannins. This easygoing, uncomplicated wine…

The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

Bright red-ruby. Medicinal aromas of black cherry, cassis and licorice. Classically dry and cool but with good mid-palate texture and ripeness. The medicinal quality carries through to the persistent finish but the tannins avoid coming off as dry. Very successful for this estate.

The 2009 Clarets (Jul 2012)

(a 55/45 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot): Good dark red. Plum, redcurrant, mocha and tobacco on the nose, plus hints of dusty herbs and pepper. Sweet and smooth, with harmonious acidity giving shape to the round mid-palate. Finishes with solid tannins and firm flavors of currant and licorice. Accessible now but has the life…

A Century of Bordeaux: The Eights (May 2018)

The 2008 Cantemerle has a simple and rather monotone nose: rustic brambly red berry fruit, earthy with pencil shaving notes developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, good acidity but overall it comes across as rather simplistic compared to its peers and lacks real engagement. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 10-Year…

The 2008 Clarets (Jul 2011)

Bright red-ruby. Currant, musky oak and smoky minerality on the nose. A juicy, rather understated midweight, with harmonious acidity framing the cool flavors of currant and fresh herbs. On the light side. Sweet tannins are in balance with the wine’s fruit, but I marked this wine down for a slight green edge.
