Intellect & Senses: Bordeaux With Time (Mar 2025)

The 2011 La Fleur-Pétrus has satisfying concentration on the nose, given the off-vintage in question. Light terracotta scents permeate the loose-knit red fruit and a touch of wild mint emerges with time. The palate is quite ripe on the entry, with touches of clove toward the soft landing on the finish. It has decent length….

Italy Odds & Ends – 2017 (May 2017)

In 2008, Quintarelli did not bottle Amarone, but instead chose to declassify the juice into Rosso del Bepi. Fragrant and expressive, with a good deal of aromatic nuance, the Rosso is a terrific choice for readers who want to explore the Quintarelli style, without splurging for one of the flagship Amarones.

Focus on Barolo and Barbaresco (Nov 1998)

Excellent red ruby color. Deep aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, cassis, chocolate, flowers and herbs. Sweet, supple and very dense; rich and thick. Conveys the uncanny sweetness of the vintage without going over the top. Finishes with a thick coating of dusty tannins. This should be accessible early for a Giacosa wine.

Bordeaux 2018: Not Back in Black (Mar 2021)

An utterly fabulous wine, the 2018 Lynch-Bages captures all of the richness and generosity that make the year so appealing, and yet doesn’t stray too far from its classic feel. Rose petal, lavender, spice, sweet red berry fruit and mint are all beautifully lifted in the glass. Racy and silky to the core, the 2018…

Passing the Baton: Lynch-Bages 1945-2018 (Jul 2023)

The 2018 Lynch-Bages has a decadent bouquet, sexy almost, with luxurious black and blueberry fruit, a touch of glycerine that develops with aeration. The palate is dense and powerful with lush black cherry, blueberry and plenty of vanillary notes. Silky in texture, there is wonderful weight and poise on the finish, but it clearly needs…

2012 Bordeaux: Messages in a Bottle (Jan 2016)

The 2012 Pape Clement is one of racier, more voluptuous wines of the year. Deep, supple and flamboyant, the 2012 is laced with expressive dark stone fruit, game, cured meats and dried flowers. This is one of the more extroverted wines of the year. It should drink well with minimal cellaring and drink well to…
