Bordeaux 2012: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (May 2013)

Deep ruby. Enticing spicy lift to the aromas of blueberry, peppermint, graphite and violet. Juicy, spicy and aromatic, showing moderate depth but good mineral intensity and definition to the dark berry fruit. Finishes quite dry, with a hint of greenness and building, slightly rough tannins.

A Century of Bordeaux: The Twos (Sep 2022)

The 2012 Pape Clément has quite a high-toned bouquet with liquorice-infused red fruit, violet and camphor emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannins, high-toned and slightly volatile towards the heady finish. This needs calming down. After tasting blind at Southwold, a second bottle at the Bordeaux Index did nothing to alter…

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Saint-Aubin Murgers des Dents de Chien 1er Cru has a more complex bouquet than the Champ Tirant, certainly with more mineralité and terroir expression. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, a little oaky and slightly reduced on the finish. Again, the winemaking M.O. just comes across a little…

Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

(half of these vines are 70 years old, the other half 60): Moderately saturated medium red. Musky, soil-driven scents of fresh red fruits, crushed rock, flint and rose petal. Penetrating and sharply delineated, offering terrific intensity to its flavors of red berries, sappy cherry, minerals and blood orange. At once salty and juicy, this very…

1997, 1996 and 1995 Bordeaux (May 1998)

Medium red. Aromatic red cherry and oak spice nose. Soft, sweet and a bit lacking in shape, but smooth and very easy to drink. Fruity and spicy. A very gently extracted wine, finishing with light, even tannins.

New Vintage Champagne Releases (Nov 2004)

(73% pinot noir and 27% chardonnay) Pale pink-orange color. Wild nose began with a sherry note but showed aromas of red fruits, buttered popcorn, toasted hazelnut and almond with aeration, along with a suggestion of barrel char. Ripe, rich and creamy; full-bodied but with a spine of acidity running through the wine. Finishes with very…
