An Exploration of Time: Gruaud Larose 1831-2018 (Mar 2024)

The 2003 Gruaud Larose has a very savory nose with meat juices, singed leather and touches of fireside hearth. It comes across as more Rhône-like than Bordeaux. The palate is medium-bodied and marks an improvement over the aromatics with vestiges of stewed red fruit, black pepper, garrigues and sage notes. There is now some dryness…

California’s North Coast (May 2014)

Full medium ruby. Riper on the nose than the Diamond Mountain District bottling, offering scents of cassis, blueberry, violet, espresso and minerals. Densely packed and chewy; in fact, amazingly ripe and successful for Spring Mountain in 2011. The dark berry, graphite and espresso flavors carry very well on the long, ripely tannic finish. Incidentally, Jackson…

2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon: Terroir Matters – Updated (Nov 2013)

The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain comes across as quite ethereal and delicate, especially for a mountain wine. Sweet floral notes meld into spices, dark blue/black fruit, cinnamon and new leather. Here the flavors are gentle and suave, but at the same time, there is plenty of energy in the glass. With time in the…

The Pfalz – Not False – Promise of 2018 (Mar 2021)

Cherry and grenadine share aromatic billing with caramelized wood resin, smoky bacon and leather, anticipating the struggle between fruit juiciness and smoky as well as confectionary oak elements that emerge on a sappy palate. A lick of salt is welcome on a finish that sticks to the palate but leaves behind considerable grit.

Annual Coverage of California’s North Coast (May 2013)

(made from vines at the top of Spring Mountain Vineyard): Dark ruby-red. Musky, reduced aromas of black cherry and dark berries. Surprisingly plush and ripe on entry, then tighter in the middle, showing medicinal restraint to the dark berry flavors. This very dry, backward wine finishes with serious tannins that will require patience.

Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Château Margaux is slightly more low-key than its peers, but very precise. Crushed rocks infuse the black fruit, quite transparent and very terroir driven. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, and fine structure. Dense and weighty, with a sapid finish that doesn’t quite have same effortless ease as its peers. Maybe…
