2017 Bordeaux – Mirror, Mirror on The Wall… (Mar 2020)

The 2017 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is pretty and gracious, but it is also a little light in feel. There is good energy to the 2017, and plenty of Cabernet Sauvignon character. Today, the 2017 comes across as a bit austere and not especially charming. Let's see what happens with some time in bottle.

Vintage Seeks Home: Bordeaux 2017 In Bottle (Jan 2020)

The 2017 Grand-Puy-Lacoste was bottled at the end of June. Brambly black fruit, wild hedgerow, cedar and a touch of wild mint. This is classic “GPL”. The palate is very well balanced with brine-tinged black fruit and a fine bead of acidity. It is beautifully focused with a refined, lightly spiced finish. You have to…

2022 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti: The Lightness of Being (Mar 2025)

The 2010 La Tâche Grand Cru is an adolescent. It’s obviously no longer a young wine, but it is also not mature, either. For my palate, the 2010 is in a place where I would prefer to cellar it for a few more years. The aromatics are lovely, with plenty of the nuance and complexity…

2010 Red Burgundies (Mar 2013)

(just under 13% alcohol, without chaptalization): Good bright, full red. Ineffable high-pitched aromas of raspberry, pomegranate, cranberry, spices, flowers and white pepper. Wonderfully sappy and fine-grained, with outstanding inner-mouth mineral-driven perfume to the taut flavors of pungent red berries, flowers and spices. Most impressive today on the inexorably building finish, which features very suave tannins…

Survive Us All: Latour 1858-2018 (Feb 2024)

The 2009 Latour has an open and generous bouquet: a mixture of red and black fruit and touches of graphite and loam. This vintage displays a light marine/brine influence. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, a firm grip and superb balance. This is very focused, with impressive salinity on…

Never a Dull Vintage in the Northern Rhône (Dec 2022)

Vibrant purple. A deeply perfumed, mineral-accented bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, potpourri, incense and olive, and a dusty mineral nuance gains power as the wine stretches out. Shows superb depth as well as energy on the palate, offering gently sweet blackberry, cherry preserve, smoky bacon and fruitcake flavors that are supported by a…
