The Best New Wines from Spain (Sep 2006)

Dark red. Intense, expressive aromas of blackberry, blueberry, cherry liqueur, sandalwood, cigar box, roasted coffee and exotic chocolate. Thick and sweet, with deep red and dark berry flavors complicated by an array of pungent spices, mocha, vanilla bean and cured tobacco. Deep, penetrating and very long on the finish, with wonderfully sweet cherry and blackcurrant…

A Century of…Fours (Jun 2024)

The 2004 Phélan Ségur has a surprisingly forward nose, quite meaty in style. There is a touch of Brettanomyces that cannot be avoided, but it is integrated with the wine. The palate is medium-bodied, and here, I think that the Brettanomyces impinges a little too much on the wine, and it feels a little sweaty…

Champagne: The 2024 Spring Preview (Mar 2024)

The 2004 Dom Pérignon P2 is now entering its first plateau of maturity, where the first notes of aromatic development are present. Hints of marzipan, lemon confit dried flowers, mint, spice and baked apple tart lend notable complexity throughout. Soft contours add to its open-knit, creamy personality.

Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Réserve de Pichon Comtesse has an open-knit, slightly meaty bouquet with dried blood infusing the brambly red fruit. A little rustic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, moderate depth, off-dry with a nicely proportioned, pencil shaving-tinged finish. Fine. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

Vinous Table: Marea, New York, USA (Jun 2025)

The 2010 Dom Ruinart is as magnificent as it has always been. Once again, I am mesmerized by the wine’s freshness, precision and detail, especially in a vintage that was so challenging in Champagne. The 2010 will be one of the most enduring legacies of Chef de Cave Frédéric Panaïotis' life and career.

Margaux Focus 3: Château Margaux (Sep 2023)

The 1991 Château Margaux is a commendable wine for the vintage. It has a light mulberry-scented nose, undergrowth and wild mint, quite ferrous in style. That trait comes through on the palate that offers black fruit, iron filings, spice box and mulchy notes, yet there is a sense of harmony and cohesion. Light but charming,…
