The 2022 Champagne New Releases (May 2022)

The 2015 Extra-Brut Rosé Grand Vintage is one of the best Champagnes I have tasted from Moët & Chandon in some time. Rich and vinous in the glass, with terrific persistence, the 2015 exudes class from start to finish. All the elements are so well balanced. Hints of crushed raspberry, rose petal and blood orange…

The Top Clarets of 2006 (May 2009)

Good deep ruby-red. Expressive aromas of dark raspberry, smoked meat, black olive, iron, smoke and tobacco. Lush, broad and sweet, with a deep smoky, meaty sweetness and outstanding palate coverage. For all its breadth and silkiness, there’s no shortage of energy and definition. Finishes impressively long, with chewy, sweet tannins that dust the front teeth.

Fairest of Them All: Cos d’Estournel 1928 – 2015 (Oct 2018)

The 2006 Cos d’Estournel, for my mind, has always been leagues above its rival, Montrose, principally because its rival took a rare misstep in this vintage. 2011 Red Burgundy: Three Sides of a Coin (Mar 2014)

Grivot’s 2011 Vosne-Romanée is a sexy, open radiant wine. Red stone fruits and sweet spices are some of the nuances that flesh out in this inviting, village-level Vosne.

2011 Red Burgundies (Mar 2014)

Moderately saturated medium red. Red fruits, spices and underbrush on the nose, plus a distinct peppery element. Shows good earthy, underbrushy complexity but the pepper and herb notes currently dominate the middle palate. I find this a bit dry, especially following Grivot’s 2012s.

2003 Barolo: Ten Years Later (Jun 2014)

The 2003 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio has held up nicely. Dark red cherry, plum, cloves, new leather and licorice meld together in a mid-weight, fleshy, attractive Barolo with plenty of freshness. As always, the Bricco Ambrogio stands out in the Scavino range for its immediacy and fruit-driven personality.
