A Century of…Fours (Jun 2024)

The 2004 Montrose has a slightly rustic bouquet but is quite charming. It offers mainly red fruit, bacon fat, undergrowth and peaty scents, which are very Saint-Estèphe in style. The palate is medium-bodied with melted tannins. It is savory and a little dry, especially towards the finish, though there is good weight, and it is…

The Top Clarets of 2006 (May 2009)

Good full red-ruby. Musky dark berries and roast coffee on the expressive nose. Sweet, lush and rich, with a pliant texture to the rather carnal flavors of currant, plum, truffle and cedary oak. Finishes with spreading, sweet tannins and very good persistence. A plush Gazin with very good chewy depth, but in a softer style…

2008 and 2007 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2010)

Inky ruby. Powerful aromas of blackcurrant, dark cherry and olive, with a smoky undertone of dark chocolate and violet. Weighty dark berry and violet pastille flavors coat the palate, with velvety tannins providing shape on the back. Rich but not especially heavy, with very good finishing cling to the flavors of candied flowers and cracked…

1998 and 1997 Sauternes (Jul 2000)

Complex, highly aromatic nose melds peach, apricot, clove, fresh herbs, oatmeal and spicy botrytis notes. Very concentrated and sappy in the mouth; deep, spicy and persistent. Still a bit youthfully aggressive, but has lovely pure, honeyed fruit. Will this have the length for outstanding?

1998 and 1997 Sauternes (Jul 2000)

Aromatic, nuanced nose combines peach, apricot, pear and flowers. Ripe and intensely flavored, with vibrant, firm acidity framing the fruit salad flavors. Complicating notes of spice and honey. Young and structured for slow evolution in bottle. Superripe finish throws off notes of toffee and toast.

2001 Red Wines from the Rhone Valley (Jan 2004)

Saturated dark red color. Roasted raspberry, smoked meat and some nutty high tones on the nose. Dry, leanish and penetrating, with fruit-driven flavors of cherry and raspberry, lifted by spice. Not a fleshy style but precise and perfumed. Finishes a bit lean but with sneaky length.
