Penfolds Collection 2022 (Jul 2022)

The 2019 St Henri is a high powered and historic South Australian Shiraz. It brings together the richness of the 2019 vintage with the understated St Henri style to provide a stunning proposition. Raw power is on display with punchy aromas of violets, blackberries and ink with mocha oak sitting gently in the background. The…

Champagne: The 2024 Spring Preview (Mar 2024)

Pol Roger’s 2018 Brut Rosé is an attractive wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Crushed flowers, red cherry fruit, chalk, mint and white pepper all grace this tasty, mid-weight Rosé. The 2018 can be enjoyed as an apéritif, but it also has the substance to pair well with a variety…

1997 and 1996 Red Burgundies (Mar 1999)

Medium red. Aromas of bitter cherry, mocha, smoked game and underbrush. Tight and quite unevolved, and showing a bit of heat today. An herbal complexity and the wine’s rather tough structure are reminiscent of Bonnes-Mares. This is unyielding today but the tannins are not dry. Showed a sappy sweetness on the back end as it…

1997 and 1996 Red Burgundies (Mar 1999)

Very good red-ruby. Precise aromas of black cherry, cassis, violet and venison. Sharply defined, intense berry flavors are lifted by a floral quality. Strong but integrated acidity can’t hide this wine’s terrific sweetness and depth of flavor. In comparison, the ’97 Combe aux Moines is a bit more diffuse, with a much easier structure.

Lower Your Sails (Or Breeches): Beychevelle 1929-2019 (Mar 2023)

The 1983 Beychevelle may constitute one of the hidden gems of this era. A recent bottle was not quite firing on all cylinders. The best encounter remains a double magnum direct from the château that boasted outgoing black fruit and cigar box mixed with cedar scents. The palate is well-balanced, a fairly “gutsy” Saint-Julien. What…

In Excelsis: Château Latour 1887 – 2010 (Jul 2018)

The 1986 Latour is a vintage that has constantly left me disappointed in context of the growing season and the performance of its peers such as Mouton-Rothschild or Léoville Las Cases. This last bottle did nothing to change my opinion. It just feels enervated on the nose, as if it cannot be bothered to offer…
