Looking The Part: Pichon-Baron 1953 – 2015 (Jan 2019)

The 2007 Pichon-Baron has a light, slightly earthy bouquet that appears less fruit-driven than previous bottles. Mulch and woodland aromas nudge past the light black fruit, implying that the aromatics will mature more quickly than other recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with gritty tannin, moderate depth and chewy black fruit, though the finish seems…

2007 Bordeaux : Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Overpriced (Jul 2010)

Ruby-red. Very fresh, high-pitched aromas of kirsch, licorice and minerals: smells structured! Then juicy, tight and penetrating; quite firm and youthful but not hard. The mid-palate offers lovely perfume and dark fruit energy. Plenty of backbone here but the firm tannins are essentially seamless and pliant.

A Century of Bordeaux: The Eights (May 2018)

The 1988 Montrose is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc picked between 26 September and 9 October. I was not taken with this wine when I tasted it as part of my Montrose vertical series in 2016. A couple of years later, the nose still does not impress nearly…

Northern Rhône: Solid ’14 Reds and Outstanding ’15 Whites (Jul 2017)

(raised for two years in 228-liter barrels, half of them new) Deep ruby. Smoky, mineral-accented black currant, cherry pit and olive scents, backed by a hint of black cardamom. Sappy, sweet and focused on the palate, offering juicy dark fruit and spicecake flavors sharpened by a core of juicy acidity. Shows very good clarity and…

Finding Cool Sunshine: South Africa (Apr 2021)

The 2018 Palladius is a blend of 12 grape varieties, whole-cluster-pressed and matured in clay and concrete amphorae. Only Eben Sadie can take a gallimaufry of grape varieties and create a wine of this caliber. It has a clean, pure bouquet of wax resin, pine needles, greengage plum and light chamomile scents that gain intensity…

Finding Cool Sunshine: South Africa (Apr 2021)

The 2018 Columella was 50% destemmed, spent six weeks on the skins and was matured with 10% new oak. It has a very precise and extremely focused bouquet of blackberry and bilberry fruit, crushed stone and wilted rose petals, conveying wonderful energy and elegance. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of…
