2006 and 2005 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2008)

Deep red. Dark cherry, cassis, cola and graphite on the nose, with a deeper licorice quality building with air. Deep, rich and smoky, with chewy cherry and dark berry flavors firmed by dusty tannins. Becomes more peppery with air, showing its syrah side, as it did last year. This one will require patience.

2010 Red Burgundies (Jan 2012)

Bright red-ruby. Slightly reduced aromas of black cherry, licorice and game cleared with aeration to show higher-pitched violet perfume and espresso. Compellingly sappy and concentrated in the mouth, with outstanding lift and palate saturation to the black fruit flavors. Finishes with superb tannins and terrific structure for aging. Really leaves the taste buds quivering.

Napa Valley’s Extraordinary 2016 Cabernets (Dec 2018)

Another gorgeous wine in this range, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is fabulous. Rich, powerful and explosive, the 2016 is endowed with real energy. Lavender, sage, menthol, licorice, spice and crème de cassis are some of the notes that build in this super-expressive, layered Cabernet from Shafer. The One Point Five isn’t quite…

2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story… (Feb 2018)

Jonathan Maltus pushes ripeness to the edge in the Vieux Château Mazerat. Blackberry jam, bittersweet chocolate, cloves, new leather and menthol are some of the many notes that run through the 2015. Maltus’s wines are always very much on the opulent side of the things, but Vieux Château Mazerat sits on the extreme edge of…

2000 and 1999 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2002)

Bright full red-ruby. Aromas of smoky red fruits and spice cake. Tightly wound and firm, but less exuberant and primary than the young 2000. A solid wine with somewhat tight tannins; today one senses the wine’s acidity, even though it’s no higher than usual for this bottling. A bit inscrutable at present.

Sicily: The Island Nation (Jun 2021)

The 2016 Cerasuolo di Vittoria Grotte Alte is darkly alluring yet also incredibly pretty, as crushed violets and sweet smoke are contrasted by hints of grilled citrus and blackberries. Its silky textures wash shades of black and purple-tinged fruits across a core of zesty acids, leaving minerals and a bitter twang of lemon peels. Round…
