The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2005)

Bright ruby-red. Aromas of raw currant, kirsch, licorice, mint and chocolate. Sweet, pure flavors of chocolate and black cherry firmed by herbal and peppery nuances and an edge of acidity. Substantial tannins come across as a bit youthfully tough, but the wine finishes with excellent length.

Focus on Sauternes (Jul 1998)

Pale gold. Knockout aromas of creme brulee, coconut, vanilla bean, honey and orange peel. Lush and seductively silky in the mouth; its creamy, seamless texture makes it seem deceptively accessible today but sound acid structure should keep it going for 20 years or more. Not hugely sweet or tropical but very complex and fine. Firm,…

Two Imaginary Boys: Pichon-Lalande (Aug 2019)

The 1994 Pichon-Lalande is a wine that I have tasted several times, but it has never really appealed to me. The bouquet lacks the fruit it displayed in its youth and is dominated instead by tobacco and mahogany bureau scents. The palate is uncouth and a little hollow – again, dictated by that tobacco tincture…

1995 and 1994 Bordeaux (May 1996)

Excellent deep color. Pungent oak, talc, and black raspberry on the nose, with a suggestion of superripeness. Lush and sweet; not a blockbuster but quite suave. But compared to the even riper ’95 this shows a faint green quality. Should give pleasure early.

Stand and Deliver: 2001 Sauternes (Sep 2021)

The 2001 Guiraud sports a fragrant but not intense nose, featuring the lanolin and apricot notes that I observed previously; touches of grilled walnut surface with time. The lightly spiced palate is very well balanced with a honeyed opening and ginger-infused quince and marmalade flavors. It builds nicely on the finish without fully letting rip….

Focus on Sauternes/Barsac (Jul 2004)

Medium golden yellow color. Knockout nose combines pineapple, yellow plum, marzipan, roasted herbs and resiny oak. Superconcentrated, chewy and stylish, with flavors of honey, pineapple, marzipan, vanilla, toffee and spicy oak framed and intensified by bright acidity. Impressively dense, saline wine with a very firm spine and considerable aging potential.
