A Test Of Greatness: 2009 Bordeaux Ten Years On (March 2019)

The 2009 Haut Bages Libéral feels disjointed on the nose with quite punchy graphite aromas coming through, though it needs more cohesion. The palate is medium-bodied with a chewy entry, more red fruit than black, let down by a rather monotone finish. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

The 2009 Clarets (Jul 2012)

Bright ruby-red. Aromas of cassis, licorice, bitter chocolate and spicy oak. Sweet, rich and vinous, with harmonious acidity giving shape and grip to the fine-grained flavors of dark berries, cedar, smoke and leather. Good structure and energy here. This firmly built wine spreads out nicely on the lingering aftertaste. A big success for this property.

2017 Burgundy: A Modern Classic (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru is more mineral-driven on the nose compared to the Les Chenevottes, its limestone soils tangible in the glass. Best New Releases from Australia (Jul 2012)

Opaque ruby. A heady, intensely perfumed bouquet evokes cherry compote, cassis, violet, pipe tobacco and smoky, vanillin oak. Deeply pitched dark fruit flavors show liqueur-like power, with floral pastille, licorice and spicecake nuances building in the glass. Tannins come up with air but are quickly absorbed by this wine’s lush fruit. Smoky and sweet on…

1982 Bordeaux, 20 Years On (Jul 2002)

Bright red-ruby. Roasted aromas of red berries, spice cake and marzipan. Sweet on entry, then a bit featureless and flat in the middle palate. Ultimately rather simple, but not unpleasant.

Chianti Classico: The Stellar 2015s and Surprising 2014s (Jan 2018)

The 2015 Chianti Classico is a relatively laid-back wine for the vintage. Somewhat severe in style, especially for 2015, it offers plenty of aromatic nuance but less in the way of overt fruit. Even so, there is enough depth and structure to support at least a few years of fine drinking.
