Burgundy With A Bit of Age: 2000-2014 (May 2019)

The 2002 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very attractive bouquet with brambly red fruit mixed with bacon fat (or perhaps more like freshly sliced mortadella), hints of morels emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, the core of red fruit mixed with sea salt and black pepper towards the persistent…

2003 and 2002 Red Burgundies (Mar 2005)

Bright, deep red-ruby color. Wonderful perfumed aromas of sappy red raspberry, minerals and licorice. Silky, lacy and aromatic; opulent and generous yet quite primary. Finer than usual for this wine at Grivot. Crunchy red berry flavors lifted by a note of licorice. Finishes long and classy.

2011 Red Burgundies (Jan 2013)

(from a mix of 40- and 60-year-old vines): Good bright red. Less showy on the nose today than the 1er cru, with a distinctly darker fruit character and strong spiciness. Then juicy and sweet but a bit youthfully dry-edged on the palate, with noteworthy definition to the flavors of black cherry and licorice. Finishes with…

The 2014 White Burgundies: What’s Not To Like? (Sep 2016)

(Moreau picked his vines in Fairendes four or five days later than his parcel in La Carduse): Bright yellow. Expressive, slightly exotic scents of yellow fruits, orange and mirabelle. In a distinctly fruity style but nicely firmed and lifted by fresh acidity and rocky minerality. Shows none of the honeyed character of the Maltroie. Finishes…

Drouhin’s Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc: 1979-2016 (Feb 2019)

Pale yellow with a green tinge. More minerally and complex on the nose than the ’16, offering hints of iodine and wild herbs, along with a toasty nuance; a bit reduced, reticent and deep. Fat and ripe on the palate but surprisingly dry owing to lovely mineral-driven vinosity. The wine’s stone fruit flavors are in…

Blind Vision: 2015 Burgundy Red & White (Nov 2018)

The 2015 Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc 1er Cru has an upfront, quite oaky bouquet, although there seems to be plenty of fruit packed in behind it. That should be absorbed over the next two or three years. The well-balanced palate features tropical tones of passion fruit, peach skin and a touch of nectarine. I…
