Marquis d’Angerville: Volnay Clos des Ducs 1920-2010 (Dec 2016)

Harvested 19th-24th September: A very distinctive nose of spice and cinnamon. The fruit is gorgeous, very round. This is a really harmonious well-balanced wine with a silky, supple mouth coating texture. Drinking beautifully now, I expect the 2002 will hold for years because of its balance.

The Glorious 2002 Red Burgundies (Feb 2016)

Good medium red. Sexy fresh red berries, balsamic mint and a cool menthol quality on the nose. Incredibly backward for 2002 but already shows outstanding sweetness of red berry fruit complicated by tobacco and black olive tapenade. Powerful, palate-staining Clos des Duc with a serious spine of tannins and acidity. Jacques d’Angerville vinified the 2002s…

2002 and 2001 Red Burgundies (Mar 2004)

Good red-ruby. Big, roasted nose combines ripe cherry, chocolate, licorice, mint and spicy oak. Large-scaled, fat, rich and sweet, with a mouthfilling texture. Low in acidity but seemed to grow fresher with air. Finishes rather suave, with considerable chocolatey oak and very good aromatic persistence. This was 11.5% natural alcohol, chaptalized to 13%.

2000 and 1999 Red Burgundies (Mar 2002)

Medium ruby. Deep, sappy aromas of black raspberry, plum and cocoa powder. Thick, lush and seamless but sappy and vibrant. Offers lovely inner-mouth verve for a wine this dense. Finishes with graceful, dusty tannins and superb chocolatey persistence.

2005 and 2004 Red Burgundies (Mar 2007)

Good medium-deep red. Wild berries, meat, leather and mocha on the somewhat reduced nose. Rich and broad but less obviously open and sweet than the Roncieres. Blacker in fruit character, with some complicating herbal nuances but a bit less verve today than the Roncieres. This needs at least two years of patience and at the…

Marquis d’Angerville’s Volnay Clos des Ducs: 1920-2017 (Oct 2019)

Good medium red. Lovely perfume of raspberry and flowers complicated by subtle soil tones. Seamless, balanced and moderately rich, offering nuanced flavors of red fruits, flowers, earth, herbs and spices and no rough edges. This seems fully mature but has the spine and energy to last. Finishes with refined tannins, subtle sweetness and lovely slow-building…
