Bordeaux 2018: Not Back in Black (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Ausone is mind-blowing. The aromatics alone are mesmerizing. I don't know what more to say. Cabernet Franc is so expressive, so vibrant so nuanced. Rose petal, cinnamon, star anise and sage meld into a core of red fleshed fruit. The 2018 doesn't impress with opulence or richness, rather it is a Saint-Émilion that…

Châteauneuf-du-Pape New Releases: Welcome to the Pleasuredome (Jun 2023)

One of the wines of the vintage, Avril’s 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape turned out beautifully. It wafts from the glass with pronounced aromas of predominantly red fruits, black cherry, garrigue, white pepper and crushed rocks, giving it a ferrous-like twist. On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich, built like a brick wall and possesses staggering intensity, concluding…

The 2012 Red Burgundies from Bottle (Mar 2015)

Bright medium red. High-pitched aromas and flavors of raspberry, menthol, mint and crushed rock. Juicy and energetic for 2012 and perhaps already shutting down in the bottle. Almost painful on the back end today. This serious, firmly tannic village wine should be cellared at at least a few years.

2012 Red Burgundy: Against All Odds (Jan 2014)

Dark cherry, plum, menthol, cloves and licorice all meld together in the 2012 Chambolle-Musigny. This is a surprisingly dark, fleshy Chambolle by Roumier standards. The flavors are layered, deep and resonant throughout. A powerful village level Chambolle, the 2012 should offer a decade-plus of hugely rewarding drinking.

Myth Over Matter: Mature Burgundy 1920-2019 (Mar 2023)

The 2010 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru is just beginning to rev its motors and probably stands as one of Christophe Roumier’s crowning achievements from this vineyard. It needs little encouragement to unfold in the glass with copious Morello cherries, bergamot and crushed stone scents, just a faint touch of Earl Grey. The palate is…

Vinous Table: Bistro de l’Hôtel, Beaune, France (Jun 2013)

Yes, I know, Roumier’s 2010 Chambolle-Musingy Les Cras needs quite a bit more bottle age, but how could I resist ordering it? I couldn’t, and it was fabulous. No regrets. Sure, the 2010 will be even better in another few years, but it was pretty terrific on this evening.
