1999 and 1998 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2001)

Medium red. Deep, complex, musky aromas of strawberry liqueur, milk chocolate and earth; superripe and nuanced. Huge wine of compelling richness and depth, but with enough supporting acidity to keep it from going over the top. Completely expressive grenache flavors of plum liqueur and pepper. Finishes with big, lush tannins and palate-saturating flavor.

Dealing with the New Paradigm: Burgundy 2018 (Nov 2022)

The 2018 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru is showing a bit of heat on the nose, blurring the edges, especially compared to Taupenot-Merme’s Corton-Rognet. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy opening, modest depth, a little savoury in style with hints of truffle and sage towards the finish. It finishes better than it begins. Tasted blind at…

Back to Burgfest: 2017 Reds – Blind (Jan 2022)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru has a pastille-like bouquet of pure red cherries, strawberry and orange blossom, a little simple compared to its peers. The palate is somewhat sweet-and-sour on the entry, showing quite a bit of extraction. Spicy but not quite as clean as I would like on the finish. Difficult to…

2016 & 2015 White Burgundy (Sep 2017)

Medium yellow. Very ripe, slightly wild aromas of apricot and oatmeal lack the lift and nuance of the 2016. Fat, plush, sweet wine with just enough acidity to frame its peach and apricot flavors and to maintain its shape and verve. This very ripe village wine finishes with a light phenolic edge and a lingering…

Through the Other Side: Burgundy 2016 in Bottle (Oct 2019)

The 2016 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a detailed, mineral-driven bouquet with precise red fruit intermingling with sous-bois and light rose petal aromas. This is a killer combination of power and finesse. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannins and a perfectly judged bead of acidity. Silky in texture, it fans out with marvelous precision…

Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

(60% new oak): Dark red with ruby highlights. Complex, inviting aromas of black raspberry, peony, toast, smoke and game. Compellingly rich, creamy wine with a captivating mixture of dark berries, flowers and toasty oak. Maintains its thickness and body straight through to the very ripe, long, suavely tannic finish. A beauty.
