Central Tuscany – Maremma, Montepulciano, Carmignano and Beyond (Nov 2016)

The 2014 Bolgheri Il Bruciato, the entry-level wine from Antinori’s Guado al Tasso property, is powerful, juicy and intense. Then again, Antinori was extremely severe in 2014. The Cont’Ugo and Matarocchio will not be bottled at all, while production of Guado al Tasso is down sharply. This is an absolutely delicious wine for the year…

Red Burgundy ’16 & ’15: Superb Vintages, Different Styles (Jan 2018)

Dark red with ruby tones. Deeper but initially more subdued on the nose than the Vieilles Vignes but the wine’s chocolatey ripeness takes on compelling floral lift and lively thyme and sage notes with time in the glass. A wonderfully silky, creamy Clos Vougeot with outstanding inner-mouth lift to its dark fruit and mineral flavors…

2001 and 2000 Red Burgundies (Mar 2003)

Not surprisingly, the 1999 was almost exactly like the review that appeared in Issue 6 except that the finish is displaying a bit more tannic structure. Otherwise, the original view is spot on: Spice and very dark fruits with a wonderful mouth feel of velvet and buried dusty tannins. Despite the velvet, there is a…

Ironing Out The Kinks: Jim Barry The Armagh 1985-2021 (Jun 2024)

The now fully developed 1993 Shiraz The Armagh is still drinking well but starting to fade, presenting cedary roasted meat aromas against a backdrop of black olive and carob. Supple textures lead the way before a drying, lightweight finish concludes with wafts of aged meat and spice.

2025 Champagne: New Releases (Apr 2025)

The 2010 Dom Ruinart is every bit as magnificent as it has always been. This bottle, from the first disgorgement, is tremendous. I especially admire its explosive intensity. Citrus peel, flowers, white pepper, chalk and slate all stain the palate. Chef de Caves Frédéric Panaïotis turned out a masterpiece. The 2010 Dom Ruinart is quite…

2011 Red Burgundy: Three Sides of a Coin (Mar 2014)

The 2011 Musigny Vieilles Vignes shows wonderful energy in its expressive floral notes. Sweet red-hued fruit turns darker in the glass, but it is really the wine’s energy that stands out most. Overall, this is a fairly mid-weight vintage for the Musigny deeply marked by its resonance and balance. The 2011 is perhaps a bit…
