Opus One – Past, Present and Future: 1979-2012 (Jun 2013)

There is so much to like about the 2007 Opus One. A wine that captures the essence of the year, the 2007 is exotic, flashy and striking. Kirsch, rose petals, pomegranates and spices form a fabric of compelling beauty. The 2007 is rich, sumptuous and generous, just as it should be. Threads of striking perfume…

Vintage Retrospective: The 2007 Napa Valley Cabernets (May 2017)

(14.8% alcohol): Fresh red-ruby color. Medicinal kirsch and spices on the nose, plus a suggestion of rose. Wonderfully sweet and seamless but given shape and definition by lovely floral lift and firm acidity. There’s something old school about this beauty, which has lost some of its baby fat while retaining its primary fruit character. Finishes…

The 2013 Red Burgundies: Fascinating and Challenging (Mar 2016)

Healthy medium red. Reticent but energetic aromas of raspberry, licorice, menthol and peppery herbs. Dense and fine-grained, with black cherry and herb flavors spreading out horizontally on the back end. Finishes subtle and long. This was 12% natural alcohol chaptalized to 12.5%.

2007 and 2006 Red Burgundies (Mar 2009)

Moderately saturated medium red. Sappy maraschino cherry aroma lifted by a minty nuance. Pure and perfumed in the mouth, with lively flavors of cherry, mint, spices and rose petal. In a distinctly fruity style, showing little of the gamey side of Gevrey. But this is still very young. Finishes with firm dusty tannins and very…

Bordeaux 2020 – The Southwold Tasting (Nov 2024)

The 2020 Canon is very succinct on the nose, beautifully defined with extraordinarily pure red fruit laced with pressed violet and iris flower. The oak is perfectly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, fresh and almost citric, very vibrant and precise with a quite peppery finish. God made wine so that it can…

Bordeaux ’08: Far Better Than Expected (May 2009)

(a blend of 51% cabernet sauvignon, 43% merlot and 6% cabernet) Deep ruby. Pretty floral nose combines spicy blackcurrant and smoky plum aromas with a hint of black pepper. Sweet and fairly deep, with brooding, slightly aggressive flavors of dark cherry and blueberry. Finishes with dusty, broad tannins and a note of austerity that I…
