A Century of Bordeaux: The Eights (May 2018)

The 1988 Pavie is a vintage I have met a couple of times before, this predating Gérard Perse’s acquisition in 1997. It has an attractive old school nose of light black fruit, roof tiles and cedar; a little diffuse but still fresh. The palate is medium-bodied with a tart cherry entry, wild mushroom and sandalwood….

Bordeaux 2011: Tales of Tannins and Terroir (May 2012)

Bright ruby-red. Knockout nose offers captivating scents of superripe red cherry, Oriental spices, vanilla, milk chocolate and coffee. Creamy-rich and dense, with compelling sweetness to its red fruit, sweet spice and aromatic herb flavors. Finishes very fine-grained and long, with a wonderfully mouthcoating texture. There has never been a Roc de Cambes at this level….

The Comedown: Bordeaux 2011 Ten-Years-On (Apr 2022)

The 2011 Roc de Cambes has a pretty nose with raspberry, crushed strawberry and dark chocolate scents, a little oaky, more modern in style that its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, dark chocolate and espresso in fusing the dark berry fruit with a slightly fleshier finish. Fine. Tasted blind at the annual…

Digging up a Languedoc Treasure: Mas de Daumas Gassac 1978-2022 (Jul 2024)

Ripe black currant, crushed flowers, cedar wood and leafy nuances introduce the 2015 Rouge. Lemongrass adds a refreshing layer. Albeit sufficiently concentrated, the medium-bodied 2015 shows a subtle yet noticeable rustic element. I’m curious to see how this one develops, but for now, I’m putting my money on the standout 2016.

Champagne: The 2024 Spring Preview (Mar 2024)

The 2011 Vintage is a very pretty wine in this highly challenging vintage. Apricot, mint, dried herbs and a kiss of French oak open nicely in the glass. There is some of the savory character of 2011, but it is nicely woven into the wine’s fabric. To be sure, the 2011 is a slender vintage…

Sitting Pretty: Oregon’s New Release Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Beyond (Jan 2024)

Dark and brooding, the 2021 Pinot Noir The Beaux Frères Vineyard opens slowly in the glass, mixing dried black cherries and cola with savory herbs and dusty earth. It’s elegant and refined with polished red berry fruits and saline minerals guided by brisk acidity. Long and staining, the 2021 finishes with a youthful grip and…
