2010 Red Burgundies (Jan 2012)

(100% vendange entier): Medium red. Aromas of redcurrant, tobacco, dusty spices and rose petal. Suave, precise and intense if still youthfully tight; this appears to possess the density and saline extract to support the whole-cluster vinification. Finishes with very fine-grained tannins, a light peppery note and lovely lingering perfume. Excellent potential here.

Staring Into The Heart of Sangiovese (Jun 2012)

The 2007 Cepparello comes across as rich, round and totally seductive in this tasting. Stylistically, it shares many attributes with the 1990 and 1997, although in my view it is more elegant than those wines. There is an immediacy about the 2007 that is highly appealing, and which will make the wine accessible relatively early….

Chianti, Vino Nobile and Super-Tuscans (Jul 2010)

(100% sangiovese; aged for 18 months in barriques, one-third new and 5% American oak; 14.5 % alcohol) Deep red. Aromatic nose of ripe red cherry, menthol and underbrush, with an intriguing note of peach. Sweet, supple and dense, with ripe flavors of dark plum, almond, underbrush and tomato paste. Finishes long and smooth, with a…

Domaine A. Clape Cornas: 2012–1987 (Dec 2020)

From an abundant vintage, the 2012 Clape Cornas has always been on the somewhat forward side and is drinking quite well right now. Displaying plenty of exotic floral and spice character to go along with its juicy black raspberry and cherry flavors, this is a highly appealing, graceful midweight wine, with a hint of smoked…

2010 and 2009 Northern Rhone Wines (Mar 2012)

Opaque purple. Explosively perfumed scents of red and dark berries, potpourri and Asian spices, with black pepper and mineral nuances gaining strength with air. Juicy and expansive on the palate, showing intense black raspberry and blueberry flavors and an exotic touch of candied violet. Finishes sweet and very long, with resonating spiciness and florality. This…

Cellar Favorite: 2008 Galardi Terra di Lavoro Roccamonfina Rosso (Aug 2021)

I purchased the 2008 Terra di Lavoro upon release for a price that seems amazing for what’s in the bottle today, and then buried it deep in my cellar. In 2018, I opened the first of my six-pack, and I decided that the wine still needed a little more time. Well, that time is now,…
