Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)

Containing 40% whole clusters, the 2022 Santenay Clos Rousseau 1er Cru is more composed on the nose compared to the Village Cru, with a tad more mineralité on display. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly angular tannins, quite saline, almost briny in style at the moment. Dark, blacker fruit emerges towards the finish. Fine, though…

2017 Burgundy: A Modern Classic (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru matures in 30% new oak with 70% whole bunch fruit from the 70-year old vines, which is the source for the domaine’s massal selection. This tends to be picked earlier than the other vineyard in order to obtain freshness. The bouquet is very refined and quite intense with…

A Vintage with Issues: Burgundy 2021 (Oct 2025)

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Goulots 1er Cru has a nose that feels a bit pushed along in the winery and does not quite compensate for the lack of complexity and nuance. Perhaps it will develop into something more interesting with time? The palate is medium-bodied with grainy, slightly rigid tannins. Drier than its peers, it…

Servants of the Seasons: Burgundy 2021 (Jan 2023)

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin En Pallud has a lovely mulberry scented bouquet that blossoms in the glass. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with an edgy, peppery opening, admirable depth, clove and tea leaf with a precise finish. If you didn’t get your hands on Maume’s En Pallud, look no further.

Dance the Quickstep: Burgundy 2020 (Dec 2021)

The 2020 Meursault Les Chevalières is a step up from the Monthélie as it demonstrates much more tension and complexity on the nose: hazelnut and citrus peel, a slight tertiary quality. The palate is well balanced, not deep or intense, but fresh and delineated with just enough salinity on the finish. Drink over the next…

Servants of the Seasons: Burgundy 2021 (Jan 2023)

The 2021 Marsannay Es Chezots has a lively, vibrant bouquet with pure Dorset plum and bilberry scents, light iris petal aromas. Very detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, quite chalky in texture, perhaps a little compact but I feel this has something up its sleeve for later. Fournier’s spiciest Marsannay. Great potential.
