2010 Red Burgundies (Jan 2012)

Good full red. Very pure aromas of raspberry and rose petal. Dense and fat but juicy, with chewy flavors of red berries, spices and smoky minerals. Lovely complete wine, made from a clay-rich hillside site with rock less than a foot under the surface.

Santa Barbara: Better Than Ever (Sep 2017)

Another super-expressive wine in this range, the 2014 Pinot Noir Isabelle is rich, pliant and creamy. Red berry fruit, orange peel, mint and spice are all pushed forward. This is in an especially succulent, racy style, but there is good structure and tons of potential here. The wine needs time to develop the full breadth…

South Australia, Victoria and a Bit Beyond (Sep 2022)

Saturated ruby. Smoke-tinged cherry, cassis and licorice scents, along with hints of pipe tobacco, potpourri and cola. Gently sweet and focused on the palate, offering concentrated yet energetic dark fruit, floral pastille and roasted coffee flavors sharpened by a peppery nuance. A vanilla note emerges on an impressively long, finely detailed finish shaped by polished…

The Power and the Passion: Wynns John Riddoch 1982-2019 (Sep 2022)

The classic Cabernet Sauvignon John Riddoch from 2016 is so pretty but don’t be deceived as it is also built to last. Beautifully bright and fragrant, there is impeccable fruit purity with graphite, cassis and leafy aromas underpinned by fine French oak. It then builds layers of cassis and gravel flavour with fantastic fruit composure…

The Best New Wines from Washington State (Nov 2013)

Good full red. Inviting, perfumed aromas of cherry, raspberry, violet and rose petal; initially smelled more like pinot than cabernet. A juicy, nicely delineated midweight with very good spicy, floral lift to its red fruit flavors. Little obvious sign of the 14.8% alcohol. Finishes with firm tannins, good grip and excellent retention of fruit.

Ten Years On: Burgundy 2013 (Oct 2023)

The 2013 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru has a very attractive bouquet with fine definition, fresh with dark plum, bergamot, bay leaf and Earl Grey. The palate has a grainy entry, lightly spiced thanks partly to the 10% whole bunches, more mature than the nose but with a pleasant ferrous finish. This is drinking perfectly…
