Champagne: The 2024 Spring Preview (Mar 2024)

The 2013 Comtes de Champagne is a towering Champagne, as it was last year. Rich, sumptuous and explosive, the 2013 soars out of the glass with a captivating mix of tropical fruit, apricot, passion fruit, baked apple tart, mint and yellow flowers. It is one of the most explosive, extroverted Comtes I have ever tasted….

Sitting Pretty: Oregon’s New Release Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Beyond (Jan 2024)

The 2021 Pinot Noir L’Ensemble lifts from the glass with a dark and pleasantly herbal-tinged bouquet of crushed black cherries, brown spice and hints of cocoa. Silky-smooth with tart red berry depths, this saturates the palate as tannins slowly amass toward the close. Inner rose combines with raspberry and touches of citrus as the 2021…

Joel Payne on Germany 2007 (Jan 2009)

Pale golden yellow. Floral aromas, along with melon and ginger. Tropical fruit and caramelized peach fill the mouth, nicely complemented by a delicately refreshing spice element. Crisp, finely balanced finish rich in mineral salts.

Rich gold color. Unctuous aromas of ripe peach, dried apricot and smoky botrytis. Lusciously sweet quince shows an almost honeyed texture yet with vigor and minerality thanks to the wine’s vibrant acidity. Both opulent and graceful, this wine lingers alluringly on the finish.

2013 Barolo: Sublime Finesse & Elegance (Feb 2017)

The 2013 Barolo Cannubi is silky, vibrant and wonderfully perfumed. Sweet floral notes, meld into a core of bright red cherry, mint, white pepper and white flowers. Aromatically precise and finely sculpted, the 2013 possesses superb balance. In 2013, the Cannubi is all class. This is one of the most refined and gracious of Chiara…

2018 & 2019 Barbaresco Take Center Stage (Feb 2022)

The 2016 Barbaresco Riserva Ronchi is one of the best wines in this range from the Rocca family. Sadly, there is just one 15HL cask of it. The Riserva finds a super-appealing middle ground that marries classicism with power. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice and menthol give this brooding, potent Barbaresco tons of nuance. Fabulous.
