1999 and 1998 Rhone Valley Wines (Jan 2001)

Ruby-red. Red cherry confiture, licorice and spices on the rather reticent nose. Then sweet and voluminous in the mouth, with a velvety texture and great depth of flavor. This will totally satisfy your buds. Finishes extremely long and rich, with ultrafine, thoroughly enrobed tannins.

1997 and 1996 Red Burgundies (Mar 1999)

Saturated ruby. Aromas of wild crushed blackberry, licorice and toasty oak. Great sweetness on entry, then tough and closed, bound up by its acids. The tannins seem thicker, hitting the palate earlier and covering the entire tongue, making this wine quite severe now. But this appears to possess the strongest material of Mortet’s ’96 village…

1998 and 1997 Red Burgundies (Mar 2000)

Deep red-ruby. Very reduced yet lively aroma dominated by black cherry. Fresh but slightly green, even austere, with strong acidity. The rather tough tannins cut off the fruit today. A somewhat rustic style of Vosne, lacking finesse. This wine will need time to evolve, and is impossible to assess today.

1998 and 1997 Red Burgundies (Mar 2000)

Bright ruby. Smoky black raspberry and pungent spices on the very expressive nose. Not especially fleshy, but impeccably balanced and fresh, with a superb fruit/acid balance. Lovely silky texture suggests a very suave extraction.

1997 and 1996 Red Burgundies (Mar 1999)

Bright ruby-red. Violet and dark berries on the nose. Supple and fleshy on entry, then the youthful dark berry flavors are given precision and thrust by strong acids. Quite backward, even a bit stunted today, but intensely flavored.

1996 and 1995 Red Burgundies (Mar 1998)

Spicy raspberry aroma. Nicely concentrated red berry and licorice flavor supported by bright acidity. Finishes with suave tannins and lovely, lingering fruit.
