The Annual Red Bordeaux Report (May 2004)

Bright red-ruby. Currant, herbs and smoke on the nose. Rich and suave on entry, then rather closed and austere in the middle palate, with moderately ripe, nicely delineated flavors of currant, cherry, smoke and mint. Best today on the back end, which features broad tannins and subtle lingering flavor.

Passing the Baton: Lynch-Bages 1945-2018 (Jul 2023)

The 2001 Lynch-Bages has a complex bouquet, well defined with a mélange of red and black fruit mixed with freshly rolled tobacco, sage and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. It’s sweet and candied with veins of orange peel and hints of sloes and fig towards the finish. I appreciate the harmony…

Cellar Favorites: 1996 & 1985 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande (Feb 2016)

What a treat it is to taste these two Pichon Lalandes straight from the chateau’s cellar. The 1985 Pichon Lalande opens with mature, tertiary aromatics. Still huge and concentrated on the palate, the 1985 still has remarkable depth, but the elements are out of balance, because the aromatics are maturing at a faster pace than…

Passing the Baton: Lynch-Bages 1945-2018 (Jul 2023)

The 2010 Lynch-Bages has a tightly wound nose: introverted black fruit, cedar and mint. Touches of iris flower and pencil box both emerge with aeration. These aromatics say: “Come back later.” The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine acidity and firm grip. It feels linear towards the finish but is fresh with an…

Bordeaux 2010: All That Glitters… (May 2011)

(79% cabernet sauvignon, 18% merlot, 2% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot) Deep ruby. Fresh aromas of red berries, plum, underbrush and minerals. Enters the mouth light and lively, showing clean flavors similar to the aromas. A politely styled Lynch-Bages, this pure, medium-bodied wine shows excellent balance, but some claret lovers might be left wishing…

Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 Lynch-Bages has a backward and rather surly bouquet at first, before gradually opening with blackberry, wild hedgerow, tobacco and subtle seaweed aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine acidity. It does not possess the complexity or nuance of the 2010 Grand Puy Lacoste tasted alongside and it seems more forward….
