Bordeaux 2009: The Best Ever? (May 2010)

(85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc; 14.7% alcohol; pH 3.65; 79 IPT Ruby-purple. Knockout nose is unbelievably pure and rich, exuding expressive, heady scents of raspberry, plum syrup, Oriental spices, espresso and minerals. Sweet and dense but almost magically vibrant, this wine boasts terrific depth and freshness to its pomegranate, watermelon, dark berry, mineral and…

Precious Clay: L’Eglise-Clinet 1929–2015 (Jul 2019)

The 2009 l’Eglise-Clinet was picked 14 to 28 September and matured in 80% new oak. It remains remarkably youthful on the nose, rendering the brilliant 2010 a bit introverted by comparison. This comes racing out of the blocks with ebullient red cherries, crushed strawberry and raspberry fruit, touches of dried rose petal and melted tar….

The 2009 Clarets (Jul 2012)

Good medium ruby. Essence-of-merlot aromas of bitter cherry, blueberry, boysenberry, dark chocolate, licorice and spices, lifted by a whiff of violet. Dense, thick and sweet, with a saline nuance to the seamless flavors of dark berries, licorice and spices. Wonderfully sweet, subtle and long, finishing with substantial building tannins and a medicinal reserve that bodes…

Chablis Gets the Côte de Beaune Treatment from Mother Nature (Jul 2016)

Very pale lemon-green. Pure, discreet, thoroughly ripe aromas of lime confit, white flowers, wild herbs and crushed stone. Broad and ripe on the attack, but with a magically weightless impression and outstanding inner-mouth energy to the flavors of lime and orange zest, grapefruit, white flowers and minerals. Utterly seamless, densely packed Clos with great rising,…

2014 Red Burgundies: Delicious Terroir-Driven Midweights (Mar 2017)

Good dark red. Slightly high-toned aromas of red licorice, menthol and spices, showing more red than black fruits. Much more reserved on the palate than the Clos de la Bussière, conveying strong spice character and less easy sweetness. This youthfully medicinal, fairly tannic wine finishes with excellent saline persistence.

2010 Red Burgundies (Jan 2012)

Medium red. Blackberry and flowers on the nose, with a suggestion of chalky minerality. A step up in volume and sweetness from the basic Vosne-Romanee, but with terrific juicy lift to the brilliant dark berry and floral flavors. Finishes dense, long and light on its feet. An excellent showing today.
