Champagne’s Golden Age (Nov 2015)

The 2005 Brut La Grande Année hasn’t changed much since I last tasted it about six months ago. If anything, the 2005 is a bit less interesting than it was when I first tasted it. Soft, forward and heading towards maturity, the 2005 is a Champagne to drink now and over the next few years….

This Is Not Morey-Saint-Denis (March 2019)

The 1993 Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru has an exquisite bouquet, very well defined with cranberry, crushed stone and undergrowth scents. Perhaps I would have liked to see more fruit. The palate shows quite a bit of stem addition. There is certainly some hardness here compared to other 1993s, so it does not translate the elegance of…

2006 and 2005 Red Burgundies (Mar 2008)

Bright, deep red-ruby. Wonderfully classy nose shows an almost liqueur-like quality to the aromas of black raspberry, cocoa powder and minerals. Like liquid silk in the mouth, and a step up in creamy richness from the preceding samples. Amazingly lush and classy wine with the fine-grained texture and suavity of a Romanee Saint-Vivant. Chocolatey in…

2005 and 2004 Red Burgundies (Mar 2007)

Good full ruby-red. Superripe aromas of black raspberry, dark chocolate and leather; a bit less minerally and floral than the Saint-Georges. Powerful, brooding and large-scaled on the palate but currently locked up tight and showing less sweetness than the Saint-Georges. But this big boy really saturates the palate. With its serious tannic clout and leathery…

Magic and Madness: Climens 1912-2020 (Aug 2022)

The 1988 Climens has a focused bouquet with lovely orange pith, quince, wet wool and showing a very light sea spray influence. The palate is well balanced with fine delineation, not quite as deep as the 1989. A more feminine and elegant Climens with a poised and quite persistent finish that just fades a little….
