2009 Red Burgundy (Jan 2011)

Deep red-ruby. Dark raspberry, crushed rock and a gamey nuance on the nose. Superripe and broad but also quite dry and unforthcoming today and in need of further time in barrel. Very spicy but a bit disjointed. This will require another look.

The 2009 Red Burgundies (May 2011)

The 2009 Corton Renardes is deep, long and intense. There is superb concentration in the jammy, dense fruit. This is a sweet, unctuous style that stands apart from most of the other wines in the cellar, yet everything works within the context of a powerful, virile expression of Renardes.

Bordeaux 2010: All That Glitters… (May 2011)

Almost impenetrable inky-ruby. Plum, blackcurrant and caramel on the nose, complemented by sexy oak spices. Broad, lush and sweet, with an exotic high-toned quality to the perfumed flavors of red berries and spices. Finishes impressively dense and horizontal, with silky tannins that avoid dryness. This is so soft and creamy-sweet that it almost seemed too…

The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

(15% alcohol): Bright full medium ruby. Superripe aromas of blackberry, mocha, minerals, licorice and smoked duck. Superconcentrated and powerful, with huge density and chewiness to the penetrating flavors of black raspberry, blueberry, bitter chocolate and smoky oak. This wine’s chewy minerality gives it real eclat. Most impressive today on the very long, building finish, which…

Squares & Circles: Bordeaux ‘10 At Ten (Apr 2020)

The 2010 Gracia has a deep blackberry and briary scented bouquet with touches of fig and dates, maybe just a little over-mature compared to others. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a little gamey in style with juniper and allspice towards the chewy finish. This is just opening for business (but it's far from…

Sharing Alike: Petrus 1947 – 2015 (Sep 2018)

The 1996 Petrus has never been an endearing wine and this, the third or fourth bottle that I have tasted, does nothing to change my indifference. It has a slightly herbaceous bouquet that feels enervated when compared to the flamboyant 1998. It just misses the fruit concentration and vivacity you expect from a Petrus, a…
