Bordeaux 2010: All That Glitters… (May 2011)

(a blend of 68% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot and 8% cabernet franc) Deep ruby. Intense, refined cabernet sauvignon-dominated aromas of cassis, graphite and cedar. Then austere and tight on the palate, with concentrated blackberry and mineral flavors leading to smooth but youthfully chewy tannins. The 2010 Clarets: A Modern Classic (Jul 2013)

Good deep ruby-red. Showy aromas of currant, cedar, herbs and spices. Sweet on entry, then tangy and a bit lean in the middle, with cassis and blackberry flavors complicated by minerals and herbs. Finishes with surprisingly sweet tannins and noteworthy persistence for a second wine.

Good full medium red. Aromas of plum, smoked meat, iron and rose. Supple and broad, with a restrained sweetness to the flavors of plum, smoke and meat. Seems to gain in sweetness toward the back, finishing with good breadth and length.

Subdued but classy new-oaky nose hints at flowers, chocolate, and cinnamon. A spicy, beautifully delineated wine of great class and hidden depths. Very subtle, long aftertaste. A crowd-pleaser. The ’90 is more typical for this château than the fatter but more alcoholic and soft ’89.

Delivering Where It Counts: Meyney 1971–2017 (Jul 2020)

The 1988 Meyney has a surprisingly vigorous and satisfying bouquet of blackberry, cedar and cigar box scents, more like a Pauillac than a Saint-Estèphe. The palate is medium-bodied, with rustic tannins but decent weight and cohesion, and a peppermint-tinged finish. Robust and stocky and still providing decent drinking for those with a penchant for old-school…

The HANY Charity Dinner (Nov 2007)

Dom Pérignon’s 1993 Oenothèque was a very pretty, slender wine with attractive notes of smoke, yeast and roasted nuts.
